It’s 5:30am. It’s still dark and Paris is fast asleep. Well, not all of Paris. 600 stand up paddle board lovers are getting together at the Salon Nautique de Paris, portes de Versailles. Everyone is slowly waking up, slipping into their wetsuits and lycra to take part in the biggest stand up paddle board race in the world! This year’s Nautic SUP Paris Crossing will see 600 paddleboarders riding along the Seine between the French national library and the Quai de Javel in the 15th arrondissement.

A legendary race in a spectacular setting

At 6 o’clock the first bus of paddleboarders sets off to take them to the starting point. The SUP boards are already there and waiting. These complicated logistics are smoothly handled by the Nautic team and the charismatic Didier Lafitte. Despite the early hour and the temperatures of -2°C, the racers are in good spirits as they start getting ready and warming up. The participants take up their positions in the water between 7:15 and 7:45, as the first signs of daylight appear. At 8 o’clock the race starts and the paddle boarders take to the Seine! It is very cold, but the absence of clouds and the morning light bring a unique and colorful aspect to the race. The buildings of Paris have turned orange, offering a feast for the eyes.

2016 OXBOW SUP Challenge Finale

Whilst the paddleboarders from the “leisure” category make the most of this stunning view, the “pros” don’t have time for any tourism on the Seine! Because this race is also the grand finale of the OXBOW SUP Challenge 2016! Organized by OXBOW, this year’s SUP Race competition was made up of the Guyader Grand Prix in Douarnenez in May, the Euro SUP in Lacanau in June, the Collioure Arena Race and the SUP Open Race in Annecy in September. The top three paddle boarders in each contest were directly qualified for the Nautic SUP Crossing grand finale in Paris. And the leading group certainly gave it their all! Our ambassadors Arthur Arutkin (lycra n°2), Martin Vitry (lycra n°4) and brothers Jérémy et Ludovic Teulade (lycras n° 14 et 12) all had an incredible race.

The Hungarian paddleboarder Bruno Hasulyo won the race and two members of the OXBOW team finished in the top 3! Arthur came second and Martin, who launched the very first OXBOW stand up paddle board, came third! The two men were only seconds apart, according to the electronic tracking devices. Ludovic Teulade finished in sixth place, but his brother Jérémy was not able to take part in the race due to stomach pains. He can however console himself with the fact that he came third in the overall ranking of the OXBOW SUP Challenge 2016. The contestant with the most points accumulated over three of the five stages throughout the year wins, and this year our ambassador Arthur Arutkin became the champion of the OXBOW SUP Challenge 2016! Well done Arthur! Eric Terrien came second and Jérémy Teulade finished in third place. Congratulations to all three athletes!
